Review: Kambakkht Ishq

Directed By: Sabbir Khan
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Aftab Shivdasani, Kirron Kher, Javed Jaffery
Rating: 0.5/5

Kareena Kambakkht Ishq has hit saandh ki aankh (bull’s eye) at the box office. The film has grossed Rs. 100 crores worldwide in the opening week. This is one of Akshay Kumar’s most successful films, despite all the bad press it got.

We’re actually curious as to why this movie is a hit. Maybe it’s people like us. We were drawn to it because of Kareena’s clothes, Kareena and Akshay were together, and we wanted to see how the Hollywood angle fit in. But, the biggest reason we went to watch the movie is because of all the bad press and reviews it got. We have this need to go watch movies that people dislike because we end up liking them, but this time we should’ve listened to the awaam (masses, audience).

Khush toh hum bahut hai ki humare pyare Filmistan ki ek aur film hit ho gayi hai, lekin yeh wali kyun? This movie was nowhere close to being a paisa-vasool film. We went to go watch it with a positive attitude and expected 2 1/2 hours of “laughing out loud.” But that’s not what we got.

Instead we got this:

1.) 2 1/2 hours where we were waiting for funnier dialogues and situations…remember Akshay from “Hera Pheri,” “Heyy Baby” and “Namastey London.”

2.) Horrible make-up, horrible make-up and horrible make-up!

3.) A waste of beautiful locations – why shoot in Venice when it adds nothing to the scene?

4.) Extremely distasteful scenes, dialogues – how is it the ‘holier than thou’ Censor Board approved ‘B@#!h’ and other vulgarities for a film that was approved for all audiences? (And we usually are so open, but when the material is used just because, it just becomes very unappetizing – we’d rather watch a ‘Will Farrell’ comedy – and that s@#t is funny!)

5.) A mockery of men, women, African-Americans, Sindhis done for no reason other than for cheap laughs – we could go into detail, but there are too many scenes. This is not what we expect from a Akshay comedy. He’s really gone downhill in terms of choosing films. He needs to rethink his decisions, successful or not. This film could have been so much smarter, but instead it was just really really stupid, crass and cheap.

6.) A waste of Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh, Denise Richards, Universal Studios – maybe they were supposed to make up for all the BS because they’re Hollywood…puhlees! *eye-roll*

7.) A waste of Akshay’s talent, Venice, Javed Jaffery, money, time….why were Amrita Arora and Aftab Shivdasani in the movie? The film had a huge budget and they probably felt sorry for them since they’re not doing any films right now, so they hired them…well Kareena probably made the producers hire her BFF Amrita, still don’t get Aftab…kambakkht_ishq-01-300x246

8.) A rip-off of a back-story for Simrita Rai (Kareena), from none other than Izzie Stevens from ‘Gray’s Anatomy’… even the hospital was the same!

9.) A surgery scene out of hell! We would not want Simrita to be our surgeon – wears makeup and jewelry. She doesn’t give the patient enough anesthesia, and not to mention she was using the tools as if she were cutting through a piece of steak at the dinner table!

10.) A proposal which would leave us dead.

11.) Viraj Shergill’s anger – completely unjustified. At least Simrita had a reason.

Trying to end on a positive note – there was one scene where we really laughed, right after the African-American woman is made to look like a raakshas. Kirron Kher was good as always and hilarious, even though her part could have been longer. The film had beautiful houses, locations – even if they were wasted. Kareena’s clothes and accessories were yummazing except in a scene where both of them are trying to seduce each other right after Viraj receives an award, that was a hideous red dress.

P.S. In case you’re wondering why the review is so late – we weren’t going to do it because what a waste of time! Than we saw the numbers and we had to inform the janta of the asli truth!
